if nh = pn + hm = 12 inches and ph = 17 inches, what is the value of hm in inches

ph will be equal to the sum of pn and nh. Thus:
ph = pn + nh
17 = pn + 12
pn = 5

nh = pn + hm
12 = 5 + hm
hm = 8 inches
