Answer:  x = 17.5

Explanation:

Supplementary angles always add to 180 degrees.

(angle1) + (angle2) = 180

(3x+40) + (5x) = 180

8x+40 = 180

8x = 180-40

8x = 140

x = 140/8

x = 17.5
